10 Best Hikes In America

Dedicated hikers know that for the very best vistas and chances to spot wildlife, you’ve got to be willing to lace up your hiking boots and make the trek. And, with 52 million acres of national parks, 18 million acres of state parks, and millions more at the local level, the United States is one of the very best places to do it. These winding trails and wide-open spaces provide unmatched views, excellent wildlife watching opportunities, and incredible nature scenes you won’t find anywhere else.

Here are 10 of the best hikes in America, ranked with help from the AllTrails community.

1. Angels Landing Trail; Zion National Park, Utah – This 4.1-mile five-star hike is one of the most-reviewed hikes on AllTrails, with over 2,000 ratings. With an elevation gain of 1,600 feet and some insane switchbacks (see photo!), this mountainous trek takes you high above Zion Canyon. This one’s not for those fearful of heights, as it’s rated difficult and features many steep edges. The final half-mile of the trail follows a steep ridge with anchored support chains, but the reward is well worth it! From the sheer cliff at Angels Landing, you’ll soak up some incredible views of Zion Canyon down below, as long as you’re not afraid of heights.

2. Emerald Lake Trail; Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado – As the most popular hike in the Rockies, this splendid ramble is surprisingly easy. It’s a 3.1-mile out-and-back taking you up into the pine-covered hills, with breathtaking views at every angle. The trail traverses past several alpine lakes and finally ends at the pristine Emerald Lake, which is well worth the effort. Views of Flattop Mountain, Hallett Peak, and Glacier Gorge make this one especially memorable. It’s a real bucket list hike for those who aren’t especially comfortable with long, difficult hikes.

3. Rattlesnake Ledge Trail; Rattlesnake Mountain Scenic Area, Washington – Located just an hour and a half east of Seattle, Rattlesnake Ledge Trail is a longtime favorite among Washingtonians and visitors. The moderate-rated, 5.1-miler is known for its breathtaking views from the top of Rattlesnake Ridge, where hikers can catch unspoiled glimpses of Mount Si and Mount Washington as well as the stunning Rattlesnake Lake.

4. Devil’s Bridge Trail; Coconino National Forest, Arizona – Located in Sedona, Devil’s Bridge Trail is the most popular hike in Arizona. The heavily trafficked 4.2-mile trail provides spectacular vistas of Devil’s Bridge, the largest natural sandstone arch in the Sedona area. The awe-inspiring red rocks, wildflowers, and wildlife make this hike extremely popular among tourists, so make sure to hike early in the morning to avoid the crowd.

5. Potato Chip Rock; Lake Poway Park, California – Despite its name, Potato Chip Rock is no picnic! This 7.6-mile out-and-back trail is rated as hard and takes you to an elevation gain of over 2,000 feet, so make sure to pack your most dependable hiking gear. On this trail, you’ll climb through treacherously narrow corridors and rough, steep switchbacks. But the views are well worth it, as Potato Chip Rock and Mount Woodson provide fantastic views of the Pacific Ocean and Lake Poway down below. The rock itself is a sight to behold, with its slim, potato chip-like shape that juts out over the canyon.

6. Alum Cave Trail; Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee – Proving that the best hikes aren’t all out west, Alum Cave trail offers serious hikers some of the very best views East of the Mississippi. But this one’s not a breeze, either! It traverses for 10.7 miles up Mount Le Conte and offers an elevation gain of over 3,000 feet, taking hikers past Arch Rock with views of Duck Hawk Ridge and the Eye of the Needle. Waterfalls, caves, and mountain vistas don’t disappoint at Alum Cave Trail.

7. Old Rag Mountain Loop Trail; Shenandoah National Park, Virginia – Another gem of the eastern U.S., Old Rag Mountain features awe-inspiring views of the valley below as you climb to over 2,400 feet over 8.6 miles. With several false peaks, Old Rag is known for tricking hikers into thinking they’ve hit the summit, only to have more trail to go.

8. Royal Arch Trail; Boulder Open Space,  Colorado – Boulder’s most popular trail is a must-hike for tourists and locals looking to soak up views of the stunning sandstone boulders that are so famous in this region. Royal Arch is an eroded outcrop of a larger formation that offers a natural parasol for picnicking and relaxing. At three miles, this hike is relatively short, but it offers an elevation gain of over 1,300 feet and is rated as hard, so you’ll still get a fairly solid workout.

9. Hanging Lake Trail; White River National Forest, Colorado – Yet another gem of the Centennial State, Hanging Lake Trail offers some of the very best views in the western United States. The trail is rigorous and steep, but rewards with its final view of the pristine Hanging Lake surrounded by natural waterfalls. Though it’s rated as moderate and is only three miles total, Hanging Lake Trail can be treacherous in the winter, so it’s important to exercise caution and use your best judgment when hiking this route.

10. Lake Blanche Trail; Twin Peaks Wilderness, Utah – Located just outside of Salt Lake City, this popular trail is beloved for its varied terrain. Hikers enjoy glimpses of a mountaintop lake, plenty of wildlife, and untouched mountain vistas. It’s a 6.9-mile out-and-back route that’s rated as hard, taking hikers to an elevation gain of 2,700 feet, so it’s best for experienced hikers comfortable with rough terrain.

Seeing America in Your Hiking Boots

There’s arguably no better way to see what America is all about than by packing up your daypack and hitting the trail. Whether your goal is to exercise, reflect, learn, or spot some elusive wildlife, the above routes will leave you feeling fulfilled. Make sure to check with the parks service before beginning your journey, as some of the more dangerous routes are often closed in the winter or during inclement weather. Happy trails!

15 Top Horse Safety Tips For Young Riders

We love our horses, they’re beautiful animals, but we must remember that they are large and often unpredictable. Therefore, gaining valuable safety knowledge as a novice rider is very important.

  1. Appropriate footwear is a must. Flip-flops, sandals, mesh or any thin shoes are not going to save your tootsies if you’re four-legged accidentally stands on them.
  2. To avoid spooking your horse, approach or touch from the front in order to get their attention.
  3. Being calm and quiet around your horse is important, any loud noises or sudden movements can trigger then to kick out or jump sideways.
  4. We all know how much horses like treats, especially carrots! Give them out of buckets to avoid them mistaking your fingers for one!
  5. Quick release knots and panic snaps are the best options when tying; if your horse spooks and pulls it means they can free themselves easily. The feeling of being constrained can scare the horse causing them to panic and as a result, hurt themselves or you.
  6. Never stand behind your horse, even if your grooming it’s tail. Stand to one side and gently pull it towards you. The best place to stand is next to them behind their shoulder where you can both see each other.
  7. Putting on leg bandages or cleaning your horses’ hooves can be tricky, be sure to bend over, not squat or kneel when doing so. This will allow you to move quickly if needed.
  8. When cleaning your horses stall, grooming or saddling up, to avoid chaos breaking out, it’s best to tie your horse up. However, try not to leave them unattended, while mucking out, turn them out or move them into another stall if possible.
  9. For comfort, it’s always tempting to loop lead ropes, reins or lunge lines around your hand and other body parts. However, if your horse is to pull away or rear up you may end being dragged and seriously injured.
  10. Whenever riding check your tack is fitted well, is secure and isn’t damaged. Loose threads, tired leather or ill-fitted saddles can cause accidents.
  11. Horses can be easily startled when going through doorways always make sure it is fully open to avoid then hitting it.
  12. When you lose your horse into their pasture, remove the halter facing the horse towards the gate. The prospect of freedom can get them very excited, doing this will reduce the likeliness of them from galloping off and accidentally taking you out at the same time or trying to go before the halter is fully removed.
  13. Understand their body language, if your horses’ ear is pinned back, they aren’t going to be in the best of moods. Tailor your approach/actions around this.
  14. Be confident, your horse will take confidence from you as a confident handler.
  15. Never be afraid to ask for advice or guidance, every day can be a school day!

Preparing For Your First Family Hike

Going on a family hike is a great way to pull your kids away from their screens and enjoy time together in nature. Whether you visit a local park with a trail system or you travel to a faraway destination to find new places to explore, there are plenty of places to hike and there are locations that are perfect for every family.

Preparing for your first family hike can seem a bit tricky, especially if you are bringing small children along. Hiking with your kids is a great way to help them connect with nature at an early age, but it can be a bit scary. Rest assured, though, that with a little bit of careful planning, your first family hiking adventure will go off without a hitch. Keep reading for some helpful advice on preparing for your first family hike.

Keep It Simple

Your first hike together as a family does not need to be anything elaborate. In fact, you should try to keep it as simple and enjoyable as possible. For kids, hiking is all about the experience. If that first experience isn’t a fun one, you’re going to have a hard time getting them to go out again. Choose a trail that is relatively simple and not too long. A loop that is relatively flat is a good choice. Try to find a destination with interesting features like a waterfall, lake or stream. Point out various animals and species of birds or try to identify the trees you encounter. Maintain a leisurely pace and make it all about having fun.

Don’t be afraid to go slow. When you are hiking with your family, it should be all about the journey rather than the destination. If you don’t make it all the way to the end of your planned hike, it’s no big deal. Exploring is just as rewarding and letting your kids do it will help build their love of nature.

Make Sure Everyone Is Dressed Appropriately

There is no need to go out and buy a bunch of fancy hiking gear for your first trek, but it is important to make sure everyone is dressed appropriately. Check the weather before you head out and choose clothing that is suitable. On a mild spring or summer day, a lightweight t-shirt and a pair of comfy pants work well for laid-back hikes. If the temperature is cooler or you are going on a more strenuous hike, it is best to dress in layers.

Expect to get dirty. A family hike is not the right time to wear that brand-new shirt or outfit your kids in their Sunday best. Basic t-shirts that you don’t mind getting dirty are a much better choice. Choose appropriate footwear for everyone. Even on a simple hike, flip-flops are not appropriate. Everyone should wear a pair of sneakers or boots that is comfortable and provides adequate support. Your kids may protest about wearing sneakers instead of flip-flops or sandals, but trust us, they will complain more if they wear the wrong shoes and end up with aching feet halfway through the hike!

Pack the Right Gear

Again, there is no need to go out and buy an entire sporting goods store’s worth of hiking gear. It is important, though, to load up a backpack with some essentials. Anytime you are going on a hike, it’s smart to bring a basic first aid kit and a few emergency supplies, including a lighter/matches/fire starter, emergency shelter and water filter or chemical purification tablets. If anyone in your family has life-threatening allergies, pack an Epi-pen. In areas where venomous snakes are prevalent, a snake bite kit is a wise investment.

You should apply sunscreen before you head out, but it’s also a good idea to bring some with you for touchups. Lip balm that provides SPF protection is a must, too. Bug spray should also be applied before you start your hike but bring the can with you to reapply. Look for a high-quality spray that is formulated to combat mosquitos as well as ticks. If your kids are young, look for a product that is safe for them.

Bring enough water for everyone in the family. If you are going on a short hike, a bottle or two per person should be sufficient. It never hurts to bring extra, though, just in case you end up being out longer than anticipated.  Pack some high-protein snacks, too, like jerky or energy bars. Of course, make sure you have snacks that your kids will actually eat, too. Stop for snacks frequently. Having frequent snacks instead of waiting for larger meals helps keep kids energized and can prevent them from getting tired and cranky.

If you have toddlers or infants, bring a few spare diapers or Pull-Ups and wipes. A change of clothes could be a lifesaver, too. Include a few plastic grocery bags for dirty diapers, food wrappers and other trash that you may create along the way. Bring along some fun stuff, too. Binoculars and a magnifying glass serve as the perfect tools for helping your kids make amazing discoveries along the trail. Don’t forget a camera to capture all those memories!

Have Fun!

When it comes to getting your kids interested in hiking, making it fun is extremely important. Keep your kids motivated and make sure they are enjoying themselves by creating games they can enjoy on the trail. Come up with a scavenger hunt, identify different types of wildflowers or look for birds that are native to the area in which you are hiking. Engage with your kids and let them explore. Tell your kids how proud you are of them and how well they are hiking. Tell them they’re strong, fast and all around amazing. Positive reinforcement is a powerful tool that will help make your first hike an enjoyable one and make kids want to go out again.

Eight Potential Risks Of Long Distance Running And How To Avoid Them

If you’re a long distance runner, the above sight probably makes you want to run. In fact, you may not even be reading this wonderful piece because you’re already busy lacing up the running shoes to pound some pavement. Your loss.

In all seriousness, long distance running is one of those hobbies that kind of transcends being a hobby and becomes part of who you are. Whether you derive a lot of satisfaction out of adding more and more races to your belt, or you just love the way a good 5-, 10- or 15-mile jaunt makes you feel, running can provide a lot of benefits. Aside from burning calories, improving cardiovascular health and reducing the risk of cancer and other diseases, running can greatly improve mental health by working to reduce anxiety and depression and improving your general mood.

There’s a lot to like about long distance running but alas, like all good things, there’s some bad that can come with the good. Fortunately, understanding these risks and being intentional about countering them can keep you upright and running–and when time allows, reading great writing like this.

Here’s a look at eight potential risks of long distance running and how to avoid them.

Injuries

Athletes and sports fans have likely heard coaches or broadcasters utter some iteration of the phrase, “There’s a difference between being hurt and injured.” The intimation is that you can work through being hurt while being injured will keep you sidelined. While there may be some measure of truth to the expression, being hurt or injured is not fun. Both can result from long distance running, especially if you’re not smart about how you run.

How to Avoid

Be smart. Generally speaking, most injuries can be avoided altogether or mitigated by having a plan, sticking to said plan, knowing your body, taking care of your body and understanding your limits. Having the appropriate head-to-toe–and then-some gear to carry you safely through all those miles is necessary as well.

Inflammation/Swelling

Muscle damage and inflammation can pop up after pretty much any intense exercise, and long distance running certainly qualifies. General soreness is one thing but IT band soreness or conditions like runner’s knee are more serious issues to be wary of.

Gradually ramping up your running program is a good way to steer clear of these conditions. It’ll be too much of a shock to your body if you jump from 10 miles a week to 30 without any buildup. Implementing a thorough stretching routine before and after your run can also be crucial to keep you feeling good enough to get back out there tomorrow and the next day, and the day after.

Cramps

Stitches aren’t fun. And we’re not talking about the kind that suture cuts and scrapes. Side stitches are a type of stomach cramp that can plague some runners in the abdominal region. It can vary in severity but is certainly enough to throw you off your pace or even prevent you from continuing on.

To avoid it altogether, don’t run on a full stomach and work plenty of side torso twists, lower back and abdominal exercises into your routine. If stitches do pop up, decrease your pace for a few minutes and practice deep breathing techniques to soldier through the pain.

Blisters

You might think of blisters merely as nags, but they can be terribly painful and, left untreated, can lead to a poor form that opens the door for a whole gamut of problems. Since blisters are simply the result of the foot sliding or rubbing inside the shoe, wearing well-fitted running shoes and comfortable socks is the best preventative measure.

Allergies and Asthma

It’s not unbelievably common but since they’re outside so much, long distance running enthusiasts with allergies and asthma can be more prone to have those conditions flare up. Exposure to airborne allergens is obviously greater for runners than it is for those who don’t get outside a whole lot. When it comes to asthma, running without proper hydration–more on that in a bit–can dry the airways and lead to attacks. Knowing the severity of your conditions and managing it accordingly, with the help of medical professionals, is the best course of preventative action.

Dehydration

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Any long distance runner worth his or her salt probably has a running water bottle attached to their person at pretty much all times. Failure to hydrate disrupts all your body processes, leading to a whole host of problems that can be especially severe–think heat stroke–if they come to a head during a long run or race.

Since it’s a real challenge to stay hydrated on really hot days, investing in a hydration pack or waist pack is wise for running diehards. Opt for ones that strike an ideal balance of weight, storage capacity and durability to satisfy even the most weight-conscious runners. Ones with breathable material allow for maximum comfort so you can get plenty of water without being weighed down by even more sweat.

Poor Form

Unless you’re an ultra-serious competitive runner, chances are you haven’t given a lot of thought to your form. Well, it’s worth dedicating some time too because the poor form can help bring about a wide swath of problems. Proper form will also help you be more efficient, which can help you meet those goal times you’ve been striving for.

Studying good running form or consulting a running coach can help, but for starters, think about rhythm, posture and relaxing. Practicing all three will help keep you in tip-top shape.

Overtraining

We hit on this earlier, but it’s worth reiterating. Running beyond your current level of fitness puts muscles, tendons, and ligaments under great strain. Shin pain or even worse, shin splints, can be a common symptom of overtraining. To remedy, think about incremental progress and train accordingly without overdoing it.

How To Choose The Right Fishing Rod With Balanced Capabilities?

In any sport or fishing, having the right equipment is very important. In the midst of a wide range of bait techniques, fishing rod companies have developed special rods to cast specific baits more perfectly.  Furthermore, they’ve also rightly balanced these capabilities with other relevant features to provide the angler with a great benefit over a hooked bass. A really efficient fisherman or woman can now be able to choose the perfect fishing equipment. The right fishing rod for a particular situation enables anglers to cast baits perfectly, identify more strikes, and position the hook suitably to capture a fish.

Choosing the perfect fishing rod begins with your preferred option. A flipping rod to capture a fish with crankbaits is not a simple task. In this situation, identifying the different parts of a rod and how they function is usually the first step in choosing the right fishing rod for the task just around the corner. With regards to a bait casting rod, the main things considered are length & material, power, and mode of action. The true combination of these main things enables more accurate casts with a specified technique.

Rod Length and Material

The right fishing rod’s length should only be restricted to an angler’s capability to utilize it. In general, a 9- 10-foot fishing rod is the best. On the other hand, longer rods raise more line on a hook set; thereby, enabling an angler for a good swing. They are also good at balancing related pressure against the jumps of a captured fish. As a result, the longer rod can be able to provide more control to an angler over a fish. Besides the length, the fishing rods are usually made of fiberglass and graphite. Graphite is the best one, and also fiberglass is used in the fishing industry. At what time you’re employing baits that need a rod with a lighter action; fiberglass is capable of offering the needed parabolic bend. But still, a graphite rod has better sensitivity and is an excellent choice in the majority of cases.

Power Applied

Power involves the amount of pressure applied by an angler to create a rod bend. The fishing rods that involve heavier action need more power or pressure to make them bend. On the other hand, light action rods bend in an easier way. Rod manufacturing companies label rods as light, medium, or heavier ones. In a few cases, there are separate levels such as light-medium or medium- heavier. Some rod manufacturers also label rods with the power-rating description; usually one to five (one for light action and five for heavier action).

Mode of Action

The mode of action involves the application of pressure on how and where the rod bends or flexes.  Many rod manufacturers use the same three categories i.e. light, medium, and heavier. Other rod manufacturers use speed deviations to express action. i.e. light action, fast, and super fast. A super fast action rod will bend a few inches more, earlier than moving power to the blank, which is measured fast. A light action will bend almost a third of the technique down the rod blank, which is measured somewhat slow. The power of the rod is balanced by the action for casting specific baits. The mode of action is also helpful when capturing a fish. The baits with treble hooks create a lighter action and also check the hooks from getting free. A heavier mode of action enables an angler to force a hook into the mouth of a fish.

Finally, buying the right fishing rod can be an awesome process. However, if you stick to the above- mentioned guidelines, you’ll certainly be able to get the perfect fishing rod.

Camping Toilet Guide

If you love traveling, camping, or hiking, then it’s a great idea to get a quality camping toilet. The average person usually goes into the woods if nature calls. But this is not always the best option as it can be quite difficult for women when compared to men. With a quality camping toilet, the dangers and challenges that you face when you visit the woods are greatly minimized.

Camping toilets bring comfort, convenience, and safety in the wild away from home. These toilets are usually inexpensive, easy to use, and very hygienic. So, if you intend to go fishing, hunting, camping, or hiking, a camping toilet is a great tool to add to your list.

In this article, we’re going to talk about everything that you need to know about camping toilets. From their features to their importance and how to dispose of waste!

How do camping toilets function?

Camping toilets work with very easy technology. Normally, a simple camping toilet will come with one seat, something that will support you above the ground, and a catching system that will hold all the waste. A good number of camping toilets come with waste bags that enable you to easily dispose of the deposit without having to be in contact with it. If you were to clean the interior of the toilet without the addition of the bag, things could be very messy.

The importance of investing in a good camping toilet

No more digging holes

When you go out camping, nature may come calling in the middle of the night, and this may force you to look for a spot behind the tent or a tree to help yourself. You will have to dig a hole and cover your poop, but the smell may not disappear away completely. To avoid all this risk and bad smell, you can get a camping toilet which is not only comfortable and safe but as well as odorless.

Comfort

Not all people love seating on a toilet, but just a handful love squatting while pooping. A camping toilet provides comfort, and you won’t have to strain. Types of portable camping toilet

Bag camping toilets

These are the most common types of camping toilets that you will come across. This is because these toilets are easy to deal with and very convenient. With a bag camping toilet, all the waste is caught in the bag and disposed of later.  Some bag camping toilet comes in the form of flush, but others can be a simple, fold-able toilet. In such a scenario, you may have to seal the bag by yourself unless the toilet has a bag-sealing system.

Flush camping toilets

These are in the same category as chemical toilets. They normally have a reservoir under the seat which you flush after finishing your business. Most of these toilets will use a strong chemical to reduce the strength of the odor while at the same time performing partial disinfection. When this is carried out, it will be much easier for you to deal with the disposal, without having to be exposed to the strong smell.

In addition, some of the flushing camping toilets leave the waste exactly where it is but others separate it and then circulate the chemically treated fluid throughout the toilet tank. The work of the chemical will kill all the bad stuff; so, the toilet will remain very hygienic.

RV camping toilets

Even though some people prefer camping in tents, there are those who love RV camping. RVs are more comfortable than tents, and that’s why some people prefer them over tents. People who love using RVs prefer composting toilets when they can’t dispose of their human waste. These toilets are preferred because they turn human waste into fertilizer that you can safely drop in the garden and use it.

How to properly clean and maintain a camping toilet?

This highly depends on the type of toilet as they come with different instructions from the manufacturer. With regard to where you’re going and how long you plan to be there, you may want to consider how often you will have to maintain your toilet. Imagine carrying a foul-smelling toilet for more than 6 hours from the back of your vehicle.

Maintaining your toilet will depend on the type of camping toilet that you have. Some toilets need regular maintenance while others don’t. For instance, some flush toilets come with their own cleaning deodorizer and agents that will keep the toilet clean for a longer period of time. Nevertheless, you will be required to give your toilet a good clean the moment you get home.

If your toilet comes with a bag, you will have to replace it after every use. More preferably, bags with biodegradable materials are used. These are preferred because they decompose easily when thrown into the waste site.

Cleaning a portable toilet should be done in the same way that you would your home toilet. If you’ve got a clean toilet, you will be comfortable using it and the posterior should be sparkling clean.

How to dump the waste?

When dealing with camping toilets, this is one of the things to have in mind and do it properly. This is because you just can’t leave the waste inside as it will start to stink. As a matter of fact, you should dispose of the waste after helping yourself.

For those who are in a camping ground, chances are that there will be a dumping station or place where you can securely dispose of the waste. In most cases, many manufacturers include disposal instructions on how the waste and liquids in the waste tank or bag should be disposed of.

But for those who are not close to a camping site, have to find a way to dispose of human waste. One of the ways of disposing of your waste in the woods is by digging a hole that is around 6-inches deep and at least 100 meters away from any water source. You should be extra careful not to contaminate the water for animals or even outdoor enthusiasts around your camp.
